Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association pushes for stronger sustainability frameworks

Pushed by cloud adoption, digital services and artificial intelligence (AI), regional demand for data hubs is projected to expand almost 20% every year through 2028. The International Energy Agency (IEA) anticipations that Southeast Asia’s data centre electricity use will certainly almost double by 2030 contrasted to 2024– a pattern mirrored across the wider APAC area.

Among the examples cited is Singapore’s BCA-IMDA Green Mark for Data Centres (GMDC)– an accreditation plan collectively developed by the Infocomm Media Growth Authority (IMDA) and the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) to acknowledge data facilities with strong sustainability performance and energy-efficient strategies.

The Asia-Pacific Data Centre Association (APDCA) has released a new white paper calling for better guideline and market collaboration to improve power sustainability throughout data centers in the region.

Developers are encouraged to work together very closely with regulatory authorities and market associates to establish constant power performance requirements across the APAC markets.

” Balancing power sustainability with the increasing need for digital infrastructure is one of APAC’s defining hurdles,” says Jeremy Deutsch, chair of APDCA. “With the ideal plan frameworks, Asia-Pacific governments can ensure that digital change developments hand in hand with net-zero ambitions.”

Labelled Data Centres and Energy Sustainability: A Regional Perspective on Best Practices and Policy Frameworks, the paper was released on Oct 27 and outlines strategies to minimize the environmental effect of data facilities whilst satisfying the rising need for electronic facilities in Asia-Pacific (APAC).

The APDCA participants involve leading worldwide providers, such as AirTrunk, Equinix, Digital Realty, ST Telemedia Global Data Centres, and Princeton Digital Group.

The white paper emphasize best methods to boost power efficiency across the data centre lifecycle– from site option, design and building to operations and monitoring. It also suggests policy measures to accelerate accessibility to clean and renewable energy with stronger grid framework and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).
